Boquete draws so many visitors because it has the best of both worlds: you can enjoy the serenity of a small town set among the mountains while at the same time experience the comforts of modern city infrastructure. In our last post we looked at three awesome Boquete day trips: Playa Barquita/Las Olas, Las Lajas, and Cangilones de Gualaca. In this post we will look at two more day trips in the Chiriqui province, just under 2 hours away from Boquete.

Volcan/Cerro Punta. Travel time from Boquete: Between 1.5 and 2 hours. These two quaint mountain towns sit on the other side of Volcan Baru. Visit Finca Dracula Orchids Farm and Finca Haras Cerro Punta, where they raise thoroughbred race horses. Scout out Arte Cruz, an artist who works in the woods, or explore the local hieroglyphics. Make sure and buy homemade mango, strawberry or passion fruit wine from a road stand stand. Keep your camera handy – the rolling green hills dotted with little cottages that give this side of the mountain an almost Swiss feel are incredibly picturesque.

Boca Chica and the Chiriqui Gulf Islands. Travel time from Boquete: 1.5 hours to Boca Chica plus 1 hour to reach the islands. Head down to Boca Chica on the Pacific Coast and take a boat tour to explore Chiriqui Gulf National Marine Park and it’s

amazing islands. If you can only take one day trip from Boquete, make it this one. The islands feature some of the most beautiful white sandy beaches on Panama’s Pacific coast and the turquoise water is clear, warm and inviting. The Islands of Gamez and Bolaños are popular places to snorkel, swim, and relax on the beach. If you want more adventure, head inland for a hike, or head to Isla Palenque and try and spot a howler monkey. If you really only have a day, you might consider San José Island, as it is the closest to Boca Chica.
